“Building Scotland” Chapter 3 – Moses Jenkins … The advent of the movement for agriculture improvement saw the development of a great number of small brickworks for use by tenants on estates. These brickworks would often see tenants digging and moulding their own clay before being allowed to use a communal kiln. Examples of these brickworks are evident at Blairdrummond estate and at the Styx brick and tile work in Perthshire, demonstrating that small scale local production still had an important part to play in Scotland’s building tradition despite the rise of the larger works of the central belt.
