06/09/1876 – Edinburgh Evening News – At the Edinburgh Sheriff Summary Court today, a man named Robert Paterson pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting  Michael Chrystal, manager of Polton Brickwork, Cockpen on the 28th of April last. He was sentenced to 40 days imprisonment.

28/02/1883 – Glasgow Herald – Midlothian colliery and brickworks for sale – The Polton Colliery and Brickwork with the tenants part of the lease and the whole machinery, plant and miners dwelling houses connected therewith … The pits have won 5 workable seams of coal, 4 of which rest on good clays which are cheaply got and well suited for the manufacture of all kinds of fire clay goods and the other is worked in connection with excellent oil shale. The machinery and plant are in good order and there has been recently erected a new pumping engine made in the most improved system. The brickwork is extensive and capable of turning out all kinds of fire clay goods. Reduced upset price £4500. 06/08/1925 – Dalkeith Advertiser – At a meeting of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Board of Management on Monday, intimation was made of receipt of £104 as the quarterly contribution from the employees of the Lothian Coal Co., Ltd., at Whitehill and Polton Collieries and Brickworks.

01/11/1929 – The Scotsman – In presence of a large and representative attendance, the funeral of Mr James Hamilton, a director of the Lothian Coal Co. ( Ltd . ), and general manager of the Whitehill and Polton Collieries and Brickworks took place yesterday from his residence, Rosedale, to Hawthorndcn Churchyard.
