ST 88 P S 1 D

Found by Ian Suddaby at the old Manuel Works, Whitecross.

This example is not in my possession.

Ian states – At 8.3kg this is a heavy brick although at 9½” x 5″ x 3½” it’s a bit bigger than average too. The black stencilled markings say ST 88P S1D (or 61D?) with possibly 1PG or IPG below. There are blue crayon marks too I can’t read. It’s a shame they largely stopped using impressed stamps as there were lots of mixture variations used. This one could easily be the late 1980s or 1990s.
ST is Stein and 88 will be the % of Alumina. S and D could be Super Dense with possibly the customer below.

  • Stein, Castlecary Fireclay Works, Castlecary, Stirlingshire.
  • Stein, Manuel Firebrick and Refractory Works, Whitecross, Stirlingshire.
  • Stein & Co, Anchor Brickworks, Denny, Stirlingshire.
